Dr. Savraj Grewal appointed Associate Dean, Research Grants

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Savraj Grewal, PhD, as the new associate dean, Research Grants. The appointment was effective Nov. 1.

Dr. Grewal will take over the role previously held by Dr. Ray Turner, PhD, and will step down as the associate director, Basic and Translational Research, and co-lead of the Faculty Development and Mentorship committee at the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute. He is currently a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at CSM.

Dr. Grewal earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacology from King’s College London, UK, and a PhD in cell and developmental biology from Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, OR. He carried out his postdoctoral research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Centre in Seattle, WA, and joined the University of Calgary as an assistant professor in 2007.

Dr. Grewal’s research is focused on molecular and development genetics, molecular biology and disease. The Grewal Lab studies the control of cell tissue growth using a combination of molecular, genetic and proteomic approaches, and to investigate cell-to-cell signalling pathways and the genetic mechanisms that control how cell, tissue and body growth are controlled.

Dr. Grewal has received an Alberta Cancer Foundation New Investigator award, an Alberta Innovates Health Solutions Research Scholar award and a Canadian Institutes of Health Research New Investigator award.
