Cancer Outcomes Research
Cancer outcomes research focuses on understanding the effects and results of cancer treatments and interventions on patients' health, quality of life, survival rates, and overall well-being. It aims to improve care by analyzing treatment effectiveness, side effects, patient preferences, healthcare utilization, and other factors. It also aims to bridge the gap between research findings and clinical practice, to implement evidence-based interventions into practice and improve patient outcomes.
Cancer outcomes research relies on access to real world data on patient outcomes, collected using standardized data collection methods, as well as tracking patient outcomes over time. Capturing patients' perspectives on their treatment experiences and quality of life adds valuable insights to this field of research.
Our programs
Program Lead: Dr. Winson Cheung
The Oncology Outcomes (O2) Program is focused on real-world evidence (RWE) generation in oncology. The team conducts rigorous research to accelerate clinical practice and policy impact with the end goal of improving patient outcomes. Novel approaches are developed and used to understand gaps and needs within unique cancer groups. The group also develops innovative tools to help with reducing uncertainty in decision making.
Program Lead: Dr. Linda Watson
Within the Applied Research & Patient Experience team at Cancer Care Alberta, Alberta Health Services, researchers are working together with staff, patients, and their caregivers to better measure and record symptoms, experiences, and outcomes from the perspective of those at the centre of it all – the patients themselves. Integrating Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) ensures better communication, tailored support, and more control in the hands of patients.
