Dinos celebrate a record 147 Academic All-Canadians
The University of Calgary honoured a record 147 student-athletes Tuesday at the annual Academic All-Canadian Breakfast, presented by Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
Representing nearly a third of Dinos student-athletes, Academic All-Canadians require a minimum 80 per cent average (or equivalent) on a full-time course load while participating in U SPORTS. The total of 147 from the 2018-19 academic year is the largest in Dinos history, dating back to the program's first year in 1990, and recipients received their commendation from U SPORTS along with personalized letters from the Rt. Hon. Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for our university and our athletic department," said Jason Kerswill, director of athletics. "Our student-athletes continue to lead the country in the classroom and on the playing field, and this recognition is the perfect cap to a fall semester that saw our teams have virtually unprecedented success. Sincere thanks to our Dinos GPS academic support team for continuing to increase this number year over year, and especially to our student-athletes who continually blow us all away with their ability to juggle so many competing priorities.
The entire UCalgary community should be incredibly proud of this accomplishment.
Angelique Saweczko, UCalgary's registrar, recognized the outstanding accomplishment of several student-athletes in the MacEwan Hall Ballroom. Five student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.00 GPA: Janelle Rice (field hockey / Werklund School of Education); Maddison Fritze (soccer / Arts, Werklund School of Education), Dana Wood (hockey / Schulich School of Engineering), and Elysa Sandron (rugby / Graduate Studies). An additional eight student athletes achieved a GPA of 3.96 or higher.
The Faculty of Kinesiology led the way with 37 students earning Academic All-Canadian Status, followed closely by Arts (28), the Haskayne School of Business (25), and Science (20). The Werklund School of Education has 14, while the Schulich School of Engineering has 11 and the Cumming School of Medicine seven. Nursing (5), Graduate Studies (5), Social Work (3), and Open Studies (2) rounded out the faculties with Academic All-Canadian representation.
All Dinos programs were represented on the list, with track and field/cross country leading the way with 32. Women's soccer posted the most impressive accomplishment, with 19 of the 26 players on the 2018 roster – 73 per cent of the team – earning the accolade. Swimming and football each had 13 recipients.
