Braden Manns appointed senior associate dean, clinical research, CSM and associate vice-president, health research, UCalgary

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and the Office of the Vice-President (Research) are pleased to announce the appointments of Dr. Braden Manns, MD, as the CSM’s new senior associate dean, clinical research, and the associate vice-president (health research) at the University of Calgary. The appointments take effect July 15, 2024.

Manns takes over the roles previously held by Dr. Marcello Tonelli, MD, whom we thank for serving in the role for 10 years.

Manns is a specialist in kidney diseases and a professor of medicine and health economics at UCalgary. He has a wealth of leadership experience, having served in many senior roles within Alberta Health Services. He was the associate chief medical officer and medical lead for the Strategic Clinical Networks from 2018 to 2022 and interim vice-president of medical operations in 2021. He later served as interim vice-president of provincial clinical excellence.

Manns has research expertise in applied health economics, pragmatic clinical trials, health-care policy, knowledge translation and patient-oriented research. He has led the development of national research networks including collaborations between physicians, researchers, decision-makers, and patients and their families. He was the co-principal investigator of Can-SOLVE CKD Network, Canada’s largest kidney research initiative, funded by the CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research). He is a past president of the Canadian Society of Nephrology and has served on provincial and national committees for drug evaluation, including a term as chair of the Canadian Expert Drug Advisory Committee.

Manns completed a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry at the University of Saskatchewan and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, followed by an internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at UCalgary. He earned a master’s degree in health economics at the University of York, England.

Manns was awarded the 2024 Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada Mentorship Award recognizing a faculty member who demonstrates an exemplary commitment to providing mentorship, guidance and inspiration to colleagues.
