Remembering Bryan Hiebert
Bryan Alfred Hiebert completed a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Calgary in 1966; he then went on to earn both a master’s and doctorate degree in Counselling Psychology at the University of Alberta. After working as a teacher, psychologist and principal at a number of K-12 schools he joined the faculty at Simon Fraser University. In 1986 he came to what was then the Faculty of Education at UCalgary.
During his time at UCalgary, Dr. Hiebert focused his research on stress and stress control, evaluation and accountability, and career guidance and counselling. As well, he served as a member and chair of more than a dozen university committees and held the position of Associate Dean of Applied Psychology from 2000-2005. He retired as a tenured full professor in 2009.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Hiebert shared his expertise as a member of several national and international organizations including the Alberta Guidance Council, Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, International Association for Educational and Vocational Guidance and National Career Development Association.
Dr. Hiebert was well-respected by all who worked with him; friends and colleagues remember him for his leadership, knowledge and dedication to learning.

"Bryan Hiebert was a tireless worker and an outspoken advocate for counsellor training. He was a strong believer in the importance of providing leadership and service to the developing field of counselling in Canada and internationally. For many years, he served as President of the Canadian Guidance and Counselling Foundation, leading it through its transition to the Canadian Career Development Foundation. He also served as an ex-officio member of the Canadian Guidance and Counselling Association (now Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association – CCPA) Board of Directors. During that time, he was instrumental in developing the CCPA Canadian Certified Counsellor program. He was an avid runner and kept fit by running marathons. He regularly organized the Lope and Stroll early morning fund raiser at the annual CGCA conferences."

From the time he arrived here, Bryan was always an active contributor to the university through his teaching, research, and involvement in leadership and service positions. He was a definite change agent, making a difference in all he took on. He mentored many faculty and graduate students, who spoke highly of the help and advice he provided."

"Bryan served as a former Associate Dean of our former Division of Applied Psychology. He was also instrumental as a co-developer of the Campus Alberta Master of Counselling program which was a collaborative partnership with the University of Lethbridge and Athabasca University. Bryan served as President of the International Association of Educational and Vocational Guidance. He was active in providing service leadership at University, Provincial, National and International levels."

"Dr. Bryan Hiebert served as President of the Canadian Career Development Foundation and as Vice-President and President of the International Association of Educational and Vocational Guidance. Dr. Hiebert was revered internationally as a leader and major contributor in the field of career development. Dr. Hiebert advocated for the creation of the Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners, which were subsequently used as the foundation of standards and guidelines in several other countries. Bryan’s encouragement for the students he supervised helped them to better understand the nature of career development and to have the confidence and expertise to pursue their personal career goals.
