CANCELLED 9th Annual Philosophy Graduate Student Conference

Given the recent escalation in COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases, the University of Calgary has adopted a framework based on Public Health Agency of Canada guidelines to determine whether previously scheduled events should proceed as planned. Upon review of the specifics of this event, it has been determined that the 9^th Annual Philosophy Graduate Student Conference will be cancelled.

This cancellation was not done due to a specific risk, but rather because of the weighting of risk factors around COVID-19 such as event size, nature, audience composition and travel considerations. The 9^th Annual University of Calgary Philosophy Graduate Conference “Trusting Relationships Between Science and the Public: Locating Problems and Generating Solutions” will be held April 30 – May 1, 2020 in Calgary, Alberta. The keynote speaker is Naomi Scheman, Professor of Philosophy and Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota.

The conference will address the question “How can we constructively criticize science from a variety of perspectives, without further damaging public trust in science?”

The deadline for submissions has been extended to February 29, 2020. Paper topics may include but are not limited to:

• general philosophy of science
• trust and criticism of science
• feminist philosophy of science
• indigenous criticisms of science
• intersectional criticisms of science
• social epistemology
• environmental ethics

Organizers especially encourage submissions from members of marginalized groups. Submissions of papers of up to 3,000 words (not including abstract or bibliography, but including footnotes/endnotes), prepared for blind review and suitable for a 20-minute presentation, should be submitted to https://easychair.org/cfp/ucpgsa9.
