The Margaret and Andrew Stephens Family Foundation Research Fellowship
The purpose of this award is to fund a top postdoctoral (post PhD) or clinical (post MD) fellow pursuing research activity related to gynecologic cancers.

Purpose of Award
The purpose of the award is to fund a top post-doctoral fellow (post PhD) or clinical fellow (post MD) pursuing research activity related to gynecologic cancers. The award is intended to provide valuable research training experience and to support the development of competitive applications for external salary awards at the provincial or national levels.
Use of Funds: A research stipend and/or salary and benefits for the fellow.
Duration: The term of fellowship support is one (1) year.
Eligibility
Candidates are eligible to apply for the Margaret and Andrew Stephens Family Foundation Research Fellowship in Gynecological Cancers if:
- The applicant is being recruited for or is currently in a postdoctoral (post MD or post PhD) research training position affiliated with the University of Calgary with a primary supervisor who is a member of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute.
- Applicants must be working on research related to gynecologic cancers, spanning the continuum of biomedical science to clinical research, health services, population health research.
- When the Fellowship is awarded to an MD or a clinician, the recipient must spend a minimum of 25% (ideally >50%) of their time on research during the time that the award is held.
- Successful applicant/awardee will be registered with the Charbonneau Cancer Institute as trainees.
- The applicant holds total scholarship funding less than $50,000 at the time of award announcement.
Financial Support
The total award is $50,000. For clinical trainees, the funds can either be spent as $50,000 for 1 Year as salary top-up with expectation of matching funds (as above) and/or a research stipend (or combination thereof). For nonclinical fellowships the award will be disbursed as $50,000 x 1 year, with the requirement of matching funds to meet the minimum postdoc funding guidelines at the Cumming School of Medicine. The matching funds can come entirely from the Supervisor. The matching funds can come entirely from the Supervisor or if The Margaret and Andrew Stephens Research Fellowship Award (approved) by the CSM postdoctoral scholars’ program. Final approval is at the discretion of the Office of the Associate Dean of Research.
Selection process
Eligible applications will be reviewed by the selection committee, which will be assigned by the Charbonneau Training and Education Committee.
Applications will be adjudicated based on the following criteria:
- Alignment of the proposed work to challenges in gynecologic cancers.
- Quality of the research proposed.
- scientific rigor of the project
- potential impact of the research
- Quality of the research and training environment provided by the applicant’s supervisor, and co-supervisor if applicable.
- Potential impact of the support on the career development of the applicant.
- applicants demonstrated commitment to research and scholarship
- clarity of the role of the applicant in the research.
Reporting Requirements
A final report must be submitted detailing knowledge translation outputs, external scholarship applications, and awards received.
