Howard Research Excellence Award

Recognizing Charbonneau trainees with outstanding achievements in research productivity and impact

The Howard Research Excellence Awards recognize trainee(s) within the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute with outstanding achievements in research productivity and impact. These awards aim to recognize trainees who have published high-quality primary research article(s) or made similarly high impact contributions in cancer research in the following areas:

  • Cancer biology and biomedical science
  • Clinical cancer research
  • Health services and health systems research
  • Population health and epidemiology

Up to two awards may be presented each year to celebrate excellence in cancer-focused research that meaningfully contributes to new knowledge, improved care, strengthened health systems, or enhanced population health outcomes.

Application Guidelines

Eligibility

  1. Current graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical fellows whose primary supervisor is a member of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute.
    OR
  2. Past graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical fellows who conducted research in a Charbonneau laboratory and made substantial contributions during their time at the Institute
     

Submission Requirements

Applicants must submit the following materials:

  1. Completed Howard Research Excellence Award application form
  2. A brief written description (300 words) outlining:
    • The applicants most significant research contributions during their time at the Charboneau
    • The impact of these contributions on cancer knowledge, care, systems, or population health
  3. An electronic copy of the research contribution(s)
    • If a manuscript is accepted but not yet published, include proof of acceptance
  4. Current CV
  5. Supervisor’s letter of support highlighting the applicant’s:
    • Impact of their contributions to cancer research
    • Independence and innovation
    • Research Excellence

All materials must be submitted to charb.education@ucalgary.ca.
 

Award Expectations

Award recipients will be featured in the Charbonneau Spotlight Series, an initiative of the Charbonneau Trainee Association (CTA) that highlights emerging scholars.

As a condition of receiving the award, recipients are expected to:

  • Present their award-winning research as part of the Spotlight Series
  • Engage with Charbonneau trainees, staff, and faculty contributing to community learning and scientific exchange during their session

Awards will be presented annually at the Charbonneau Research Symposium, held in May.
