Charbonneau Trainee Research Enhancement Award

To support trainees to learn practical techniques that will enhance their research project



Application Guidelines

Purpose of Award

This funding is offered on a competitive basis to eligible trainees who wish to attend a course or workshop or to visit a partnering research group, to learn practical techniques that will enhance their research project. 

Eligibility Criteria

  • The Charbonneau Education & Professional Development Committee welcomes applications from graduate students and postdoctoral scholars whose primary supervisor is a member of Charbonneau.
  • Trainees are eligible for one Research Enhancement Award during their training period at the Charbonneau Institute, regardless of their trainee category at the graduate or postdoctoral level.
  • Undergraduates are not eligible.

Financial Support

Awards up to $1,500. 

Funding is strictly for costs related to attending the research development opportunity (registration, travel, and accommodation) 

Application Deadlines 

Applications are accepted as follows: 

  • Awards will be granted on a rolling basis, subject to the availability of funds.
  • Applications must be submitted prior to departure. Applications for travel that has already occurred will not be accepted. 

Application Instructions 

Applicants are required to complete the Trainee Research Enhancement Award application form, available on the Charbonneau Trainee Funding webpage.

The application form requires the following supporting documentation:

  • Trainee’s updated curriculum vitae (including biographical information, education, research experience, publications, abstracts, awards, and honours)
  • A brief summary (~1/2 page) explaining why you are attending the course, workshop, or research visit and the benefits it will provide your research project (or potentially the lab and broader Charbonneau community)
    • For course or workshop: Brief description or outline of, and link to, the opportunity
    • For research visit: Letter from the host research group, confirming their willingness to host the trainee and the purpose and feasibility of the visit 
  • Letter from the trainee’s supervisor approving the course, workshop, or research visit 

 

Terms of Award

Upon their return from the research skills development opportunity, awarded trainees are required to submit a brief report (~600 words) describing the experience and reflecting on how the training has contributed to enhancing their research skills and project.

 

Evaluation Criteria 

Applications for Charbonneau Research Enhancement Award will be adjudicated based on the following criteria: 

  • Relevance of the proposed course, workshop, or research visit to enhancing the applicant’s research program
    • Specifically, the applicant must justify why this objective cannot be achieved within the Charbonneau Cancer Institute or the University of Calgary.
  • Proposed learning objectives from the opportunity
  • Quality and feasibility of the proposed training activity
  • Expected impact of the training on the applicant’s research skills and career development
  • Applicant’s research excellence
