McClure Memorial Cancer Research Award


The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute invites applications for research projects focused on cancer. Funded by the McClure Memorial Cancer Research Endowment Fund through the Calgary Health Trust, applications focused on translational, clinical, health services, and/or population health research with a clear focus on cancer are welcome. However, work funded by this award must not include animal-based research.



Application Guidelines

  • Principal Applicant must hold an academic appointment (including adjunct) at the University of Calgary or at Alberta Health Services.
  • Members of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute are eligible to apply.
    • If you are not yet a member of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, you may apply for membership at the same time you submit this application.
  • One award will be available from the available funding.
  • If you currently hold an internal award administered by the Charbonneau Cancer Institute, you are not eligible to apply until the award is spent or a final report has been submitted to the institute.
  • Funds will be awarded based on feasibility (timeline, research environment, resources, and expertise), scientific merit of the research, significance and impact of the proposed project, and alignment with the funding call as described above.
  • Patient and/or care-giver involvement in the development of the study is encouraged, where appropriate.
  • Funds must be non-overlapping and can be used for:
    • Salary support for research staff, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, trainees, patient partners.
    • Research support for consumables, equipment, services, software, clinical/administrative data access, data storage, and other relevant research costs.
    • Conference registration of travel, costs to bring visiting scientists and other researchers to Calgary.
    • Capital equipment, administrative costs, including faculty or staff professional development expenses related directly to the project.
    • Funds must be used within 24 months.
  • Awards will be determined based on the project’s innovation, scientific merit, feasibility (including applicant/team), potential impact, patient involvement and/or consultation, and relevance to cancer research. As part of the review, a patient advisor may be invited to provide feedback, which will be considered by the review panel during the adjudication process.

Application documents:

  • Cover sheet (use attached form).
  • Lay summary (no more than 500 words) describing the rationale, approach, and impact of your study.
  • Statement of impact/significance (no more than 250 words)
  • Proposal (2 pages maximum): background/rationale, experimental design/methods, and significance.
  • Figures (1 page maximum) may be attached if desired.
  • References (1 page maximum).
  • Itemized budget with justification, including any current or leveraged funding (1 page maximum).
  • Abridged CV (2 pages) for the principal applicant only, highlighting publications, current and pending (applied for) funding, and any accomplishments relevant to the application.

Responsibilities of Recipients

The recipient(s) of funding from the McClure Memorial Cancer Research Award will be responsible for providing a report on the use of funds provided by the award and acknowledging the award as appropriate in publications and presentations. The Project Lead will be responsible for managing expenditures in accordance with the approved budget and reporting on an annual basis project expenditures and outcomes.
