Glen and Erin Rumpel Award in Cancer Screening, Detection, and Risk Reduction Research
The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute invites applications to a new award funded by a generous donation from Glen and Erin Rumpel. This award is intended to provide seed funding for research that focuses on:
- IMPROVING CANCER SCREENING AND EARLY DETECTION - This research aims to answer the question of whether cancer can be detected and screened for more precisely and efficiently. With a better understanding of the risk factors that influence individual-level cancer risk and population-level cancer risk, we can apply this knowledge toward more precise and effective ways of screening for cancer.
- REDUCING POPULATION-LEVEL CANCER RISK - This effort will be focused on addressing questions regarding who is most at risk of cancer and how we might better predict and mitigate risk; what the most cost-effective ways are to reduce and prevent cancer; and what approaches can actually move the needle on effective public policies and real-world change.
Application Guidelines
- Principal Applicant must hold an academic appointment (including adjunct) at the University of Calgary or at Alberta Health Services.
- Members of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute are eligible to apply. If you are not yet a member of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, you may apply for membership at the same time you submit this application.
- Two awards up to $75,000 each will be available from the $150,000 available funding.
- Funds will be awarded based on feasibility (timeline, research environment, resources, and expertise), scientific merit of the research, significance and impact of the proposed project, relevance to cancer screening, detection, and risk reduction, and alignment with at least one of the themes described above.
- Joint applications from two or more investigators/research groups to foster collaborations are encouraged.
- Applications for new projects that have the potential to grow to larger projects in the future, and projects that add value to existing projects are encouraged.
- Applications from new/junior investigators are encouraged. Note: New or junior investigators with gaps in research resources or expertise may benefit from co-application with a more established investigator.
- Patient and/or care-giver involvement in the development of the study is strongly encouraged.
- Funds must be non-overlapping and can be used for:
- Salary support for research staff, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, trainees, patient partners
- Research support for consumables, equipment, services, software, clinical/administrative data access, data storage, and other relevant research costs
- Conference registration of travel, costs to bring visiting scientists and other researchers to Calgary
- Capital equipment, administrative costs, including faculty or staff professional development expenses related directly to the project.
- Funds must be used within 24 months.
- Awards will be determined based on the project’s innovation, scientific merit, feasibility (including applicant/team), potential impact, patient involvement and/or consultation, and relevance to cancer screening, detection, and risk reduction. As part of the review, a patient advisor may be invited to provide feedback, which will be considered by the review panel during the adjudication process.
To be considered for the award, submit the following:
- Cover sheet (used attached form)
- Proposal (2 pages maximum): background/rationale, experimental design/methods, and significance.
- Figures (1 page maximum) may be attached if desired.
- References (1 page maximum).
- Itemized budget with justification
- Abridged CV (2 pages) for the principal applicant only, highlighting publications, current and pending (applied for) funding, and any accomplishments relevant to the application.
