Jennifer Gardiner Award in Surgical Oncology Research


The Department of Oncology and the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute invite applications for research projects focused on surgical oncology. Funded by the Jennifer Gardiner Endowment, this opportunity will support research to develop and/or improve approaches to cancer surgery and enhance outcomes for patients undergoing surgery for cancer. Applications are welcome from any area of cancer research (i.e., basic, translational, clinical, health services research, and/or population health) with a clear focus on surgical oncology.



Application Guidelines

  • Principal Applicant or at least one of the Co-Applicants must hold an appointment in the Department of Oncology, Division of Surgical Oncology.
  • Membership with the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute is encouraged. Membership guidelines and application form can be found under the "Our Members Tab" on the website
  • One single award for $32,900 will be available.

    • Funds can be used for equipment, materials and supplies, or personnel support.
    • Funding must be non-overlapping.
    • Funds must be used within 24 months.

    Application documents:

    • Cover sheet (use attached form).
    • Proposal (2 pages maximum): background/rationale, experimental design/methods, and significance.
    • Figures (1 page maximum) may be attached if desired.
    • References (1 page maximum).
    • Itemized budget with justification.
    • Abridged CV (2 pages) for the principal applicant only, highlighting publications, current and pending (applied for) funding, and any accomplishments relevant to the application.
  • Funds will be awarded based on feasibility, scientific merit, and relevance to surgical oncology.
  • Joint applications from two or more investigators/research groups to foster collaborations are encouraged.
  • Applications for new projects that have the potential to grow to larger projects in the future, and projects that add value to existing projects are encouraged.
