Summary of Research

Research projects have typically included undergraduate students and postgraduate residents. The projects have addressed patient and spouse experiences of cervical cancer and lung cancer. Most recently, Dr. de Groot has been involved in a feasibility study for a psychological intervention for individuals with advanced cancer. 


Biography

Dr. Janet de Groot is a psychiatrist, Professor of Psychiatry, Oncology and Community Health Sciences, and founding Associate Dean, Equity and Professionalism (2008-2017) at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary.  Her research interests include psychotherapy for those with advanced cancer and their close other, vulnerability and resilience in communities of practice and medical education for equity, diversity and inclusion. She holds funding for the following projects:

1. Co-PI with Dr. Kathleen Sitter: AB Cancer Foundation (2020-2022): Preventing depression and enhancing preparation for end of life among advanced cancer patients and their close other

2. PI:  University of Calgary Indigenous strategy grant (2019-2021): Indigenous video and simulation project for decolonizing healthcare
