As the University of Calgary prepares for the upcoming fall semester, Residence Services is buzzing with anticipation and energy, ready to welcome more than 2,650 students who will call the residences home, including 1,216 first-year students.

For many, this will mark the beginning of a transformative adventure filled with opportunities to learn, grow and form lasting friendships. For many families, it’s a bittersweet moment; the pride of seeing a loved one step into a new chapter is mixed with the emotion of their first time living away from home.

Students and parents arriving on campus will be greeted by more than 120 dedicated student and staff volunteers ready to help unload belongings and help with moving in to Residences. From the moment they arrive, the goal of the volunteers is to create an atmosphere of warmth,  enthusiasm and excitement.

Creating a community to call home

Residence Services offers a range of housing options, from shared dorm-style rooms to apartment-style living, all designed to foster a healthy academic and social environment. Living on campus means students have a supportive community right outside their door, with countless opportunities to make connections and feel at home.

“Move-In day is more than just moving boxes; it’s a celebration of new beginnings,” says Shane Royal, Senior Director of Ancillary Services

“It’s a chance for students to meet their new neighbours, explore campus and start building the community that will carry them through their university experience.”

Support every step of the way

Living on campus offers access to a range of resources, including academic support, wellness programs, leadership opportunities, recreation facilities, social events, and of course, convenient proximity to classes. Everything students need to thrive is just steps away, making living on campus a great choice.

All You Care To Eat

All You Care To Eat (AYCTE) dining is available to all students and staff on campus, located in The Landing, in the Dining Centre (adjoining International House and close to the Kinesiology complex). The Dining Centre reopens on Move-In day and you can learn more about hours of operation, drop-in rate and meal plans on the Unicard website

The AYCTE meal plan offers students fresh, diverse food options to keep them energized throughout the academic year. It’s also a great and convenient spot for UCalgary staff to enjoy a meal on campus; simply drop in and pay the door rate.

What’s happening on Move-In day

Outside the Aurora Quad, at Aurora Hall on 24 Avenue NW, the Service Fair will feature information booths where staff and volunteers will be available to help students navigate any questions they may have about living in Residence and campus life.

Alongside these supports and resources, students can also enjoy a variety of games and activities designed to help them connect and settle into campus living.

“Move-In day is always one of the most exciting and emotional days on campus,” says Royal. “We’re thrilled to welcome students and families and are committed to helping them find success, connection and joy in their new home at UCalgary.”

If you haven’t already signed up to volunteer, there’s still time for staff to join in and contribute their energy to this exciting day. Your involvement can make a real difference in helping students feel at home from the moment they arrive. Sign up today!
