Study finds younger cancer survivors 11 times more likely to die prematurely years later
“I didn’t want just a bad news story, but one of ‘how can we prevent chronic diseases from occurring?’” says cancer epidemiologist Dr. Miranda Fidler-Benaoudia, PhD, in a recent Calgary Herald article.
The article highlights a comprehensive study led by Dr. Fidler-Benaoudia, which analyzed data from 1983 to 2017, tracking 24,459 adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors in Alberta. The study revealed that AYA cancer survivors are significantly more likely to experience premature mortality compared to their peers aged 15 to 39 years in the general population.
