Celebrating Charbonneau Alumni Excellence

Join us on Wednesday, May 8 as we invite five former trainees to share valuable insights into charting a career post-Charbonneau. This engaging and informative alumni panel will delve into their career journeys, exploring different career paths, strategies for managing work-life balance, and other topics.

Nancy Adam

Nancy Adam

Dr. Nancy Adam is an Advanced Imaging Specialist dedicated to help research labs and hospitals find the right microscope solutions for their imaging needs. While she was born and raised in The Netherlands, she graduated in 2020 after completing her PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Calgary. She transitioned into a short post-doc position at the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute in which she performed many of the imaging experiments for multiple projects. As an Advanced Imaging Specialist, Dr. Adams takes care of various tasks and while she had to learn many of them on the job, her PhD and post-doc experience provided her with the skill sets needed to be successful.

Shaun Moore

Shaun Moore

Dr. Shaun Moore is a Senior Scientist at Astrazeneca. After completing his PhD in the Charbonneau Cancer Institute at the University of Calgary supervised Dr. Goodarzi, Dr. Moore moved to Artios Pharma in Cambridge, UK. Here, he worked as a Scientist within the combinations and biomarker validation team where he expanded his skillset from his academic career and transitioned into a biotech working environment. Artios’ focus is on developing drugs targeting DDR pathways and thus his PhD background helped him to obtain his position. At Artios, Dr. Moore began to develop an understanding of the early phase clinical development process for small molecule inhibitors. After two years at Artios, he moved to AstraZeneca as a Senior Scientist within the Oncology Bioscience department, to work on combinations with a novel epigenetic target. Since joining AZ, he has continued to expand his skillset toward early phase clinical development within a large pharmaceutical company, gaining exposure to the vast array of expertise that is required to bring a candidate drug to Phase I clinical trials.

Elizabeth Rideout

Elizabeth Rideout

Dr. Elizabeth Rideout is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences at The University of British Columbia. She currently holds a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Sex and Gender Science Chair in Genetics, and was named a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar in 2017. Dr. Rideout’s research program is focused on identifying genes and pathways that contribute to sex differences in metabolism and metabolic diseases (e.g. diabetes, obesity). Dr. Rideout’s research focuses on sex differences in insulin biology and in fat metabolism, and combines fly, rodent, and human models. Dr. Rideout is grateful for funding from Diabetes Canada, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), CIHR, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Canadian Foundation for Innovation, and for the privilege of working on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) people.

Sheila Garland

Sheila Garland

Dr. Sheila N. Garland is an associate professor in the Departments of Psychology and Oncology at Memorial University and a registered clinical psychologist. She is a senior scientist with the Beatrice Hunter Cancer Research Institute, which supports cancer research across Atlantic Canada, and was recently elected to the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. She completed her PhD in 2012 at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Linda Carlson and then completed a CIHR-funded post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania before returning to Canada in 2015 to develop her own research program. Dr. Garland's research bridges the areas of psychology, oncology, and sleep medicine. She applies sophisticated quantitative, qualitative, and patient-oriented research methods to improve the lives of people impacted by cancer. Her pioneering work on the influence that poor sleep has on cancer recovery, and the establishment of effective interventions, has improved the nights, and days, of cancer survivors worldwide.

Jochen Fahr

Jochen Fahr

Dr. Jochen Fahr was born and raised in Ebringen, Germany. His passion for brewing began early in his childhood when his father worked at the Fürstenberg Brewery in nearby Donaueschingen. Later in life and halfway around the globe, Jochen’s passion for brewing and appreciation for local farming reconverged in Calgary when he started Brauerei Fahr in 2015. Jochen’s goal was to provide the Canadian consumer with authentic German Beer made from recipes Fahr away.

Jochen landed in Calgary in 2006 as part of his (German) Bachelor of Engineering in Bioprocess Engineering. His undergraduate degree focused on industrial biotechnology using microorganisms such as yeast and bacteria for industrial processes such as biological cosmetic ingredients. Shortly after graduation, Jochen started his Masters of Science in Medical Sciences at the U of C in 2008, but fast-tracked into a Biomedical Engineering PhD degree, of which he graduated in January 2013.

Post Academics, Jochen worked in medical and industrial fields for years, but fermented his passion for beer by brewing at home. Using his talent for designing beer recipes, he has won several (gold) medals in home brewing competitions! Having rounded out his professional experience in business, science, and engineering, Jochen took the leap in 2015 to make Brauerei Fahr Inc. a full-time endeavour. With a knack for entrepreneurship, a passion for great tasting beer, a few award-winning home recipes, and a VERY understanding wife, Fahr Beer is now an established brewery in Turner Valley, AB and keeps winning many provincial, national and international awards year over year.
