The Robert C. Westbury Award in Melanoma Research

For research aimed at understanding the biological basis of melanoma, as it relates to prevention, detection, treatment, or metastasis research to develop and/or improve approaches to preventing, diagnosing, and/or treating melanoma; or research to improve the quality of life and wellbeing for patients with melanoma.


The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute invites applications for research projects focused on leukemia. Funded by the Robert C. Westbury Endowment, this opportunity will support research aimed at understanding the biological basis of melanoma, as it relates to prevention, detection, treatment, or metastasis; research to develop and/or improve approaches to preventing, diagnosing, and/or treating melanoma; or research to improve the quality of life and wellbeing for patients with melanoma.

Applications focused on translational, clinical, health services, and/or population health research with a clear focus on melanoma are welcome. Applications that incorporate multi-disciplinary team-based science are encouraged. Funds are available to launch a new idea or support an existing project.



Application Guidelines

  • Principal Applicant must hold an appointment within the Cumming School of Medicine, Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute and/or Tom Bake Cancer Center (TBCC)
  • Research funded by this opportunity must be conducted at, or be closely affiliated with, the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer institute and/or TBCC.
  • Funds can be used for anything required for the research, including equipment, materials and supplies, personnel support, and/or trainee support. Funding must be non-overlapping and must be used within 24 months.
  •  Ideally, involve an early career investigator (within 7 years of first independent research appointment).

Application Documents:

  • Cover sheet (use attached form).
  • Proposal (2 pages maximum): background/rationale, experimental design/methods, and significance.
  • Figures (1 page maximum) may be attached if desired.
  • References (1 page maximum).
  • Itemized budget with justification.
  • Abridged CV (5 pages max, bio-sketch preferred) for all principal applicants, highlighting publications, current and pending (applied for) funding, and any accomplishments relevant to the application.

Decision Process:

  • Awards will be determined based on the project's innovation, scientific merit, feasibility (including applicant/team), potential impact, patient involvement and/or consultation, and relevance to melanoma. As part of the review, a patient advisor may be invited to provide feedback, which will be considered by the review panel during the adjudication process.
  • Applications for new projects that have the potential to grow to larger projects in the future and projects that add value to existing projects are both encouraged.
