Research Support
Grant Support and Internal Peer Review
The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute supports members throughout the research funding lifecycle, from identifying funding opportunities and developing competitive proposals to coordinating internal peer review and strengthening applications prior to submission.
Funding Opportunity Resources
Researchers are encouraged to regularly review the University of Calgary's research funding database for current funding opportunities. This searchable database includes federal, provincial, foundation, and international funding opportunities across all research pillars.
Internal Peer Review (IPR)
Internal Peer Review (IPR) provides researchers with expert feedback on funding applications before submission to improve competitiveness and strengthen grant proposals. Reviews are tailored to the objectives and review criteria of the target funding program and may include scientific, methodological, and strategic feedback.
Researchers are encouraged to request an IPR as early as possible in the grant development process.

An IPR may be particularly beneficial if:
- You are preparing a major national or international grant application.
- You are submitting a new funding application in a highly competitive competition.
- You are resubmitting a previously unsuccessful application.
- You would benefit from feedback outside your immediate area of expertise.
- You would like reviewers to assess alignment with sponsor review criteria.
Early engagement allows additional time to incorporate reviewer feedback before the sponsor deadline.
Institute staff can provide support with:
- Identifying funding opportunities aligned with your research program.
- Connecting researchers with potential collaborators.
- Reviewing strategic alignment with funding opportunities.
- Coordinating internal peer review panels and reviewers.
- Providing advice on grantsmanship and proposal competitiveness.
- Connecting investigators with University of Calgary research support resources as needed.
Researchers are encouraged to contact Institute staff early in the development of major funding applications.
