“The journey to many incredible opportunities starts here.”

With those words, Dean Bill Rosehart welcomed more than 1,000 first-year students to the Schulich School of Engineering during Orientation Day 2023 on Sept. 1.

The day started with the students receiving their red, yellow, black and white scarves, which are keepsakes to remember their upcoming time at the University of Calgary.

They then went to MacEwan Hall for the annual opening address to students, featuring a number of speakers including Schulich alumna Monika Tamber, BSc (Eng)'04.

“Education is the great equalizer,” the cybersecurity expert and mentor said during her inspiring remarks. “It doesn’t matter where you come from, how much money you have, or what car you drive. With hard work, dedication and education, all obstacles can be surmounted.”

The students then took part in a number of activities including a scavenger hunt with challenges, visits with clubs and teams, and a doughnut treat to end the day.

“Orientation is one of my favourite parts of the school year,” Rosehart said. “Engineers are change makers and I’m excited to see how this new class of students will impact our world.”
