Inaugural Year of the Interdisciplinary Working Group on the Ethics and Politics of Narrative

Under the generous support of the Calgary Institute for the Humanities, the Interdisciplinary Working Group on the Ethics and Politics of Narrative, co-convened by Dr. Agnes Tam (Assistant Professor of Philosophy) and Dr. Martin Wagner (Professor of German), marked a successful inaugural year. The group brought together scholars from a wide range of disciplines—including Political Science, Classics, English, Communication, and Philosophy—and across career stages to explore the power of narration in shaping ethical and political life.
In addition to regular reading group meetings, the Working Group hosted four guest speakers. In person, we welcomed Ansgar Mohnkern (Assistant Professor of German, University of Amsterdam), who presented his work on Proust and the Logic of Algorithms, and Andrea Westlund (Professor of Philosophy, Florida State University), who gave a talk on Friends as Fellow Travelers. Online, we were joined by Nella Darbouze-Bonyeme (Research & Development Specialist, Quebec Institute for Adult Education) for a conversation on Towards a Narratology of Race: A Study in Black Revenge, and Hannah Kim (Assistant Professor of Philosophy, University of Arizona) on Narrative Meaning, Translation, and Korean Literature.
